This week the Lucky Ladder looks at the best last minute Christmas gift ideas you could buy for the gambler in your life.
Surely not. You can’t possibly have left it THIS late could you?
Gulp! Oh well, all is not lost. If you need a last minute pressie for someone who loves a flutter, you have two options: firstly, you could buy a gift voucher for the bookies. These are a bit shrouded in secrecy though it seems; Ladbrokes and Paddy Power used to do them, but nothing is mentioned online for either of these now. I have however found a site that offers Coral vouchers, which may be worth a look.
Secondly, and this is a tempter, you could buy a stake in a racehorse!
If you’ve always fancied donning your tweed and taking your place in the owners’ area or parade ring of a racecourse, this is the gift for you!
Let’s get one thing right here though: you’re unlikely to be retiring early from any winnings accrued. These are 0.025-0.033% stakes, so whilst you may see a little money back, it’s safe to say this is more of an ‘experience’-type gift.
But if visiting your horse in the stable, maybe getting some insider knowledge, and feeling a little more involved in the sport sounds up your street, then take a look at ownersgroup.co.uk. The horses on offer at the moment are both trained by Paul Nicholls, and they can email you a certificate to print off right up to Christmas Day! The cheapest of the two horses is £49 for the year.
On to Ladder business, and another win last week bumps the ladder up to £79.76. Still a very healthy amount from our initial £3.
On to the Boxing Day action, and here’s the fortune-telling fish amongst the plastic donkey keyrings this yuletide:
First off, on the off-chance that you read this early, I’m thinking of going for Scunthorpe 5/4 on Saturday first (Burnley at 11/2 for the brave ladderers). [Edit – just had a look at Scunthorpe’s squad; they’re stretched thin by injuries so might be worth steering clear of for now.]
Depending on how these teams and their opponents do on Saturday, take your pick from –
1st choice – Cardiff 11/10 to beat Fulham (The Bluebirds have won their last 4 at home, Fulham having lost 4 out of their last 5 away games).
2nd choice – Blackburn 8/13 to beat Rochdale (Blackburn are unbeaten in last 5 home games, Rochdale having lost their last 3 away).
3rd choice – Perhaps Oldham at 5/4 or maybe even Hampton & Richmond (no odds listed yet).
If any of these play a stinker on Saturday though, all bets are off. As any good administrator will tell you, it’s all about the form.
Merry Christmas, and a prosperous new year to all ladderers!
